Marianna LaCanfora

Ms. LaCanfora was appointed the Deputy Commissioner for Human Resources (DCHR) on August 4, 2017.  Ms. LaCanfora is also SSA’s Chief Human Capital Officer and Chief Diversity Officer, overseeing a staff complement of 416 employees with an operating budget of approximately $74 million to administer the agency’s national Human Resource programs and policies including employee personnel matters, labor management relations, diversity and inclusion, and learning.   

Marianna began her SSA career in 1996 as a bilingual Claims Representative in the New Haven, Connecticut Field Office.  She later moved to Baltimore to accept a position as an analyst in the Office of Quality Assurance. Ms. LaCanfora held several jobs of progressively increased responsibilities, including Special Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of SSA, Assistant District Manager for the Washington, D.C. District Office, and Supervisory Program Analyst in the Office of Public Service and Operations Support (OPSOS).

Ms. LaCanfora was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2006 and has held several executive positions since that time.  She has served as the Deputy Associate Commissioner and Associate Commissioner for OPSOS where she was responsible for managing the Office of Operations’ $400M budget and executive oversight of systems and physical security, human resources, and business process development for over 1,200 field offices nationwide.  Marianna has also twice served as the Acting Deputy Commissioner for Retirement and Disability Policy (ORDP), where she was responsible for all agency program policy related to the Title 2 and Title 16 provisions of the Social Security Act.  Ms. LaCanfora was also responsible for the agency’s public policy research and demonstration activities in this role, including return to work programs for individuals receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments.

Marianna lives with her husband and two young children in Baltimore.  She received her Bachelors of Arts from the University of Massachusetts and her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, University College.
