Kay Coles James, Director
Responding to Wildfires

Once again, I am moved by the caring professionalism of the Federal workforce as we mobilize to provide relief and to help our nation recover from wildfires. In my memo earlier this week, I listed several flexibilities already available to immediately hire and/or deploy additional staff to respond to this disaster.

Today, I want to direct your attention to the support we are providing at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

We received numerous inquiries from Federal retirees who are available to serve our country again in the fight against wildfires. We have now set up a registry for retired firefighters.

Retired firefighters can inform us if they want to assist by signing up at We are receiving e-mail inquiries at and establishing a toll free number, 866-670-4943, to centralize inquiries received at OPM.

If you would like to receive a list of names from the registry, please communicate your request through your Human Capital Officer at OPM.

Thank you once again for your assistance in helping our courageous citizens as they recover from the effects of devastating wildfires.
